At its heart, science is about trying to understand the world we live in. I enjoy nothing more than picking up puzzle pieces from the environment, trying to understand the story they tell, and then relaying that story to colleagues and the public. In K-12 classrooms, I use a combination of story telling and hands-on activities to share my experiences and passion for science.
I believe that scientists have a responsibility to share their knowledge, and to use their unique experiences to inspire the next generation of researchers and citizens.

Association of Polar Early Career Scientists
I have been involved with the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS) since 2010. APECS is an international organization that serves thousands of members - all of whom are either early career researchers, educators, or citizens with an interest in the Polar Regions. As a member of the APECS Council, an APECS Vice President, and now as an ex-officio member of the Executive Committee, I have led and supported member initiatives ranging from webinars, to literature sharing frameworks, to professional development events and the 2015 APECS World Summit, which brought together members from around the world in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Colorado Springs Science Festival
The Colorado Springs Science Festival is an annual event in Colorado Springs, Colorado, which reaches >10,000 people through a variety of lectures, shows and activities. I have been fortunate to contribute to the Festival by traveling to Colorado Springs to give public lectures about my work in Antarctica and visit classrooms in the Colorado Springs area. My work with K-12 students through this program has reached >200 students via classroom visits. I was particularly proud to return to the small towns east of Colorado Springs to share my experiences with students in the rural communities that I grew up in, which are often overlooked by outreach initiatives.
